An Outdoor Rabbit Cage Should Be Built with the Weather in Mind is provided to you by Rabbit Hutches Australia where you can find everything you need about great homes for your rabbit.

There are some requirements quite specific to an outdoor rabbit cage

If you plan on housing your rabbit outdoors then you will lead to give some thought to the design of the cage. Outdoor rabbit cages should be designed slightly differently to indoor rabbit cages.

Whilst you do not need to consider weather when designing an indoor hutch your rabbit you certainly need to consider the elements if you plan on housing your rabbit in an outdoors cage.

Rabbits can be very susceptible to heat stress from hot weather. They will weather the cold better, however any outdoors rabbit cage should provide your rabbit with plenty of covered area where he can sleep comfortably out of the rain and wind.

You should provide him with a solid top to his cage, and preferably one side at least should also be solid to provide him with wind protection.

And in summer you should always have his cage in the coolest spot possible, namely in the shade on the hot days.

In winter make sure he has plenty of hay so he can snuggle into it.

Here’s a good video discussing some of the requirements of rabbit cages.

And always remember that if your rabbit is housed in a small cage, whether it’s an outdoor rabbit cage or in the house, he should always be allowed out to play during the day in a much larger space and preferably in an outdoors run.

The ideal housing solution for a rabbit, or for a few rabbits, is a rabbit hutch and run combined. As we’ve noted on this website before most people tend to buy rabbit hutches that are way too small for a rabbit.

This is generally because the smallest hutches are the cheapest, whilst very large rabbit hutches which are ideal for one or 2 rabbits are too expensive.

However if you buy a small rabbit hutch and combine it with a rabbit run around the outside of the hutch you’ve got the best of both worlds. To do so you simply build a post and chicken wire fence around the rabbit hutch so that you can open the door of the hutch each day and allow your rabbit to play in the sun and the grass. Rabbits love to play and he will be delighted if he has the opportunity to do this every day in a dedicated rabbit run.

Of course even better is to buy a large rabbit hutch and to build a rabbit run around this. The downside of buying a small rabbit hutch and run is that you commit yourself to letting your rabbit out to play in the run every single day. If he has a large hutch to live in it’s okay to miss a few days here and there.

Remember it’s always better to buy a large hutch for your rabbit instead of a small one, but if you already have a small rabbit hutch you can overcome this problem by building a run around it to give your rabbit your room to move.

There’s rabbit cages for sale everywhere.

If you’re looking to become the proud owner of a pet rabbit you need to buy a rabbit cage, or at least build one. So where is the best place to buy rabbit cages?

Undoubtedly the best place to buy a cage for your rabbit is online. Virtually all the rabbit hutches you see at your local pet store you will find online, usually at greatly reduced prices. Virtually all pet stores carry the same rabbit hutches which are imported into Australia from China by large importers, and the pet shops will generally buy from the same wholesalers.

However because they have much larger overheads, and because customers like the convenience of buying in a local store the markup on their rabbit cages will be much higher than the markup on the same rabbit cages on the Internet.

Online businesses have much lower overheads than regular stores and are able to make a profit on much lower margins, therefore they are able to sell rabbit cages much cheaper.

In our experience the cheapest place of all to buy rabbit cages is eBay. If you’re new to eBay you can see some examples of the rabbit hutches you can buy there at the top of our website.

You can buy rabbit hutches at quite a discount on eBay if you have a look and give it a go.

So many of the rabbit cages that you see available for sale now are too small. Large rabbit cages are way more liveable for a rabbit than a small one, and it upsets us to see rabbits cooped up in such tiny rabbit hutches.

Unfortunately most people try to house their rabbit in a small rabbit cage because the smallest hutches are the cheapest. This however does not do your rabbit justice. A rabbit is a naturally playful animal and needs room to do just that, play.

Your rabbit should always have room in his cage to make at least 3 hops in the one direction. He should also be able to stand tall without being cramped by the height of the roof.

And even worse than seeing a rabbit in a tiny rabbit hutch is to see 2 or 3 rabbits in a small cage.

So remember always buy a large rabbit cage for your rabbit and if you can’t afford to buy one then build then build one, but make it as big as possible.

And if you’ve already got a small rabbit cage you can give him room to play by constructing a simple rabbit run around the cage where he can go out during the day and play as rabbits love to.

The advantage of a wooden rabbit hutch

Basically a wooden rabbit hutch is built in one size that fits all and fits perfectly and comfortably for your little pets to live in. You can customize or build a wooden rabbit hutch yourself and this will add more advantages as you can get designs and tips on how to make the most ideal and suitable hutch for your bunnies.

When you plan on building up a wooden hutch, you should then design it in such a way that it would be protected from extreme weather conditions and must be durable and sturdy enough to last for a longer period of time. There are so many ideas with regards to hutch making but you have to always consider your priorities before you choose the best hutch suited for your rabbits.

If you don’t know any building skills, it is best that you hire a carpenter to help you in building the hutch. Those that have the basic wood working skills, tools and have the ability to design and construct a wooden rabbit hutch can make the hutch much more functional as you can include a number of separate compartments depending on the size of your rabbit.

You can customize your wooden rabbit hutch and make it safer and surely protect them from predators that might be lurking nearby and ready to pounce and eat them up.

There are many rabbit hutches ideas on how to build one and customize one. There are ideas for customizing a wired floor hutch or wood rabbit hutch. Most people prefer to build one that is made of wood as it would be easy for them to cut and design and can be accessed easily too. You can cut the wooden planks using a saw and join it with screw and then you can proceed to your plan and create a design prior to building a wooden rabbit hutch or a wired one.

It is highly important that you choose a wired cloth for the flooring even with wooden rabbit hutch. This is because their urine would leave a stinking smell and the urine can absorb easily in the wood and the smell will stick on it for a long period of time. If the wooden flooring is not cleaned properly, it may leave a strong and harmful smell of ammonia that will have adverse effects on the health of your bunny. So it is vital that clean and maintain the hutch for the health of your pet.

Rabbits can make great little pets. Pet lovers always want the best for their beloved pets. As a pet rabbit owner, it would be great that you provide them enough space too. Pets never fail to us smile, love, cherish, play and enjoy with them. It is vital that we show that we love them in many ways.

Caring for your bunny is important. Whether they require you to go to the vet and pay high fees or giving them the right kind of food. As a pet owner, it is your responsibility to look after your cherished pet to the best of your ability. After all, you bought a pet then you should take good care of it.

When you have a pet rabbit, it is your responsibility to ensure that their hutch is comfortable to them. It must be dry, warm, and well suited to their needs. Rabbits need an environment that is warm and out of sunlight and rain. That is why they dig holes. So this means that you have to provide them a bedroom inside their hutch that gives them this comfort. A dark, warm bedroom is absolutely perfect for them.

Rabbits love to stay in their hutches to relax and enjoy. They need space where they can huddle and protect its young and a place where they can retreat whenever they feel frightened. You need to provide your pet bunny a place where they can hide when they are afraid of anything.

Also, it is important that you secure the hutch. It is recommended that the hutches’ legs is four feet above ground level so as to prevent lurking animals from getting to your rabbit. Rabbits are little animals and they are usually preys to predators. You must also secure them from your other pet animals such as dogs or cats.

Although rabbits love to stay inside their hutches, they also love to hop around outside the hutch. They enjoy wide open spaces, fields, meadows and wooden areas. Rabbits are sociable animals and they love to be played and cuddled too. It would be great that you spend time with them.

You have to make sure that your rabbits have a sleeping area in their hutch and enough space for them to run inside. The hutch should also be placed in an area that noise is distant. Rabbits love a quiet place and they are prone to be afraid when they are in an unknown environment. So it is important that you place them in a secure and quiet place.

Why use an outdoor rabbit hutch

There are some tips that you have to consider when you plan on purchasing an outdoor rabbit hutch.

One thing that will help you to get to a decision before you buy one is through surfing the internet. You can find lots of choices and designs and styles on the internet. You can also get great ideas about the best hutch for your pet rabbit. You can find great outdoor rabbit hutches there too.

It is important that when you buy a rabbit hutch you make sure that the floor is made of wire mesh. With it, it would be easier for you to clean it. You will have to see to it if it has a solid floor and this will greatly give your rabbit a comfortable place to sleep.

Outdoor rabbit hutch will absolutely provide lots of room for your bunny whilst easy for you in taking care of it. You must know that the hutch must be four times bigger than your rabbit. Also, it should come with the basic necessities such as a feeder bowl and a water bottle. More so, the hutch must have enough space for your rabbit to move around.

Moreover, the size of the outdoor hutch must be considered. It is recommended that you purchase the largest hutch that suits your budget. When you have smaller breeds of rabbit that weigh 8 pounds, the cages should be at least 24 x 36 inches. It would be great to find an outdoor rabbit hutch that has two levels in it. You can have one rabbit run to the lower level so that your rabbit can have room for running and hopping.

It is best that your bunny to live in a hutch rather than inside your home. There are several sizes that you can choose from and this will make your rabbit happy and comfortable. If you like, you can add wheels so you can move it around easily. Another thing you can do is buy a hutch that is high off the ground wherein you can place storage supplies underneath it.

It is also important that the hutch has a tray that allows you to easily remove their droppings. Just ensure that the hole to the rabbit’s sleeping area is large enough for your pet. You can also get a hutch with a covered top feature to protect your pet against wind and rain.

Getting your pet a four feet off the ground outdoor hutch is vital. This is to protect them from predators that are lurking nearby and might eat your pet. Having it raised will give you access to the hutch easily for feeding your pet and cleaning the hutch. Always remember that safety is the most important thing you have to bear in mind.

The benefits of a rabbit hutch

A rabbit hutch is a home for your pet rabbit. Their home is basically made from wood and wire. It is best that you buy a hutch that is big enough for your rabbit to move comfortably. When you plan to buy one, it is highly important that you choose the right size hutch. If the hutch is too small, your pet cant move around easily and when this happens, this will result to them getting sick.

Before you buy one, measure your rabbit and see to it that the hutch you are going to purchase is larger than your rabbit. The hutch is ideally wide enough that your bunny can lie down with its legs outstretched. Also, the hutch should be large enough for them to be able to run around inside. However, you can also build one if you want to.

The hutch must also be long enough so that your bunny can hop at least three to four hops without its nose bumping on either end. So this generally means that the hutch must be at least four feet in width.

Most importantly, the rabbit hutch should be high enough in order for your rabbit to stand up on its back legs without bending over. Also, the ears must not touch the roof of the hutch. It is best that it should be two feet high.

Bear in mind that the measurements given is true for average rabbits so it is best that you purchase a bigger one. Once you have bought your preferred rabbit hutch, you will have to make sure that you clean it regularly. It is ideal that you rinse the hutch with warm water every two weeks. Combine warm water and antibacterial soap and some mild bleach. If the hutch is made of wood, line it with a vinyl sheet to make your cleaning easier.

More so, you should keep chewable blocks and special carrot-shaped mineral inside the hutch. Having these things will help your bunny keep busy and prevents them from getting bored and this helps keep their teeth healthy as well. It is vital that you train your rabbit to throw litter in its litter box. So the litter box must be found inside the hutch too.

Regarding their food and water, you will have to have a food bowl and hay inside the hutch. Also, there must be at least 20 ounce water bottle that is attached in the side of the hutch for easy access and you have to change the water each day.

The perfect size for a rabbit hutch

Rabbit hutches come many sizes and shapes and it depends highly on the size and character of your rabbit as to how much space you need to play with them. You can give your bunny a palatial home only if you have a small garden or backyard and this can be great.

Animal charities and animal welfare noticed that many people might be keeping their pet rabbit in a hutch that is too small. Experts fear that keeping rabbits in hutches that are not big enough for them to move around freely and easily and explore even a bit can result to psychological problems and physical problems as well.

Rabbit hutches must include a great sized run and a separate space for sleeping and resting. Bunnies are extroverted animals and they like it that they are able to explore their environment and leave their cages whenever they like to. Rabbits love to get some exercise and they love playing with their owners and other rabbits too. It would be best if you give them this freedom once in a while.

Moreover, rabbits are sociable animals and socializing them with other rabbits is highly important. Giving them a rabbit mate or a sibling they can play with is a great thing. This means that when you two or more pet bunnies, it will also require you to have a bigger hutch. The hutch will allow the rabbits to move around freely and play together. They also love fake fights and young animals enjoy this kind of activity.

There are also hutches that are large enough that it contains a space for extensive runs underneath its sleeping area. This allows them more space. This two story hutches are great for pet owners that have smaller gardens or patios but still want to give maximized space for their rabbits.

It is great know that there are lots of rabbit hutches that are available at local pet stores near you. So this is a great opportunity that you can select the best hutch that fits you and your pet perfectly. Before you buy a rabbit hutch, you have to consider the space you have in your homes and as to where you place the hutch perfectly. It is important that you place the hutch in an area where it is safe from possible predators that are lurking nearby and might eat your rabbits.

Find a rabbit hutch that suits your pet’s personality. Rabbit hutches are their homes and it is best that you provide your rabbits a great comfort inside their hutches.

Why you need to have an indoor rabbit hutch

An indoor rabbit hutch is absolutely a great accessory for your bunny. Rabbits make a great house pet and up to now, this surprises people. Rabbits are also happy to be living inside the house and outside the house as well. Also, litter training your pet rabbit is very much possible too and you can let them roam inside your house.

People tend to keep their rabbits inside because they may lack space outside or they lack suitable outside space. In many places, there are other animals that may roam around or at loose and might attempt to hurt your pet rabbits.

Having an indoor rabbit hutch is perfect for this reason. Having one is worth it as providing your rabbit a safe place to retreat during the day. Most rabbits like to explore and stretch out on the floor but then it is important that you give them a safe retreat where they can run and hide if something scares them.

Indoor hutches also provide them their home and privacy and this is vital to any animal. You can always place your rabbit in the hutch when you are out of the house or if you go to bed and make sure that they are safe. Rabbits tend to chew on wires so it is best that you always keep them safe.

When you choose a rabbit hutch, it is a must that you consider that the hutch must be large enough for your rabbit. Rabbits need to have ample space for them to stretch out and move about. In cases where you own two or more rabbits, then it is recommended that that you secure an indoor hutch that has plenty of space for the rabbits living in there.

If the hutch is too small then rabbits will surely not be comfortable with it or better yet enjoy it. Some pet owners kept their rabbits inside the hutch most of the time and let them out for a short period of time for exercise and affection. It would be best that you let them out for an average time and see to it that they enjoy their outings and ensure also that they don’t chew on wires.

The indoor rabbit hutch must be safe and secure for your rabbit. The locks are securely fasten that they will not be able to let it loose. Rabbits are persistent when they want to escape and they will do their best to do so. You also need to ensure that there are no sharp edges on the cage so your rabbits will not harm themselves.

Indoor rabbit hutch is great for rabbit lovers out there. It also cheaper compared to outdoor hutches and having one is truly rewarding.

Make your rabbit happy

Rabbits have the capacity to live around ten years or older. They are generally furry, friendly, and lovable pets especially when they are treated gently and taken care of well. So before you plan on buying one and keep it as a pet, it is important that you consider these things.

Rabbits make great indoor pets and they can be kept outside too. You can keep them inside the house in a cage or a rabbit hutch outside. If you keep bunnies indoors, then you will need to have shavings, sawdust or straw to put on the floor of its cage. The shavings must be changed daily as they will become soiled. For rabbits that are kept outdoors, a hutch is perfect for it.

There are some rabbits that grew to be a large size so it is vital that the hutch is bigger enough so as to accommodate them. A single rabbit’s hutch should have a wooden frame of at least four feet long and two feet wide. There must be section for its sleeping quarters that are made of pieces of wood found at one the hutch. It is recommended that the hutch be raised up off the ground by attaching legs to it. The ideal is four feet off the ground.

Also, it is important that the entire structure is covered with chicken wire. The roof must be made of wood and is attached to the frame with hinges on one side. You have to consider that the roof can be opened so it would be easy for you to clean the cage and allows you to access your rabbit In and out. The floor must be wood too.

During winter season, you must cover the front of the hutch using old rags, blankets or tarps. This is great to help the cold wind off your rabbit. During the summertime, you can hang tarps just above the top of the hutch to keep it from the heat and help keep your bunny shaded from the hot sun. You must bear in mind that you do not lay it directly on it because this will absorb the heat.

You will feed your rabbit with vegetables especially carrots. They also need to eat rabbit pellets to ensure that they get the proper nutrition needed. You can also feed them with rabbit hay, clover, oats and grass. Also, it is important that you always keep a water bowl in the cage and fill it with clean, fresh water. Replace the water daily.

Just like any other pets, rabbits need to visit to the vet regularly to ensure that they stay healthy. Signs of illness include loss of appetite, hair loss, constipation, diarrhea, dull eyes or inactivity.

Keep your rabbit safe, rabbit proof your home

Generally, rabbit proofing involves three basic things. First, this is to prevent destruction of your property. Second, this will ensure the protection of your rabbits and lastly, this provides a safe and fun chewing four your bunnies.

You might ask why rabbit proofing is so important to your home. Here is a brief answer. Rabbit proofing prevents rabbits from chewing on electrical cords which might cause injury to your rabbit. They might be burned or electrocuted. When they bite electric wires, puts your rabbit at risk so it is best that you do necessary precautions to keep the cords safely and out of their reach. Here are ways to do that.

Keep electrical cords out or reach through “spiral cable wrap”. It is basically 10 feet long and this works as bunnies don’t intend to chew it. However, there are bunnies who manage to chew through it. This spiral cable warp is very much flexible so you can still manage the cords after wrapping it. It is perfect if you have cords that are in the middle of the room or cords that you move often such as vacuum cleaner, lamp, telephone and the like. Keeping cords in this manner makes it tidy and it is not bulky too.

You can also perform plastic tubing. This is basically the same with the one used in fish tanks. You can buy it at the hardware and slit it lengthwise with a blade and the wires can be tucked in safely inside it. There is also the harder type, black, pre-slit type of tubing available.

You can keep cords safely by using decorative gold and wood-grained wire-concealers. Ii sticks to the base of your walls that come in strips, corners, and other parts so it can follow the shape of the wall. However, this is costly and can take so much of your time compared to clear plastic tubing installation but then using this method is much more permanent and rabbit proof as well.

Wires can be kept behind and above furniture and carpets so that your little pets can’t reach to the wires but you have to remember that you should not run the wires under carpets as this is risky and might cause fire.

Rabbits make great pets. They are cuddly and they love to run around and they love to chew on wires. As a pet owner, it would be great that you keep note on these tips to keep your lovely pet safe from harm.

Taking care of your things from your pet rabbit

Rabbits make great pets and they love to chew on things. They love chewing house plants, baseboards, chairs, furniture, beds and even walls. To keep your bunny from chewing on these stuffs, here are tips on how rabbit proof so as to avoid any damage to your precious things.

Rabbits love to chew house plants. To keep your rabbit from eating house plants, here is what you are going to do. Putting them on high furniture may not keep your rabbit away. So it is best that hang the house plants from the ceiling if you have a hyper bunny but you have to watch for leaves. There are many house plants that are toxic to rabbits. So if you are unsure which plants are toxic, you can research on what plants are poisonous to rabbits.

Rabbits also love to chew on baseboards and wooden furniture and if they insist in doing so, you can place a board over the places of temptation. This makes it inaccessible to them and also provides an acceptable chewing surface. More so, if you are going to use this method, it is important that you train them on chewing on these items.

Upholstered furniture and beds that are several inches off the ground makes a wonderful place for rabbits to hide underneath it. However, there are rabbits will burrow up the soft underside and makes it a nest. To prevent your rabbits from doing this, place a flat cardboard box or a frame of 2x4s that is smaller than the area of the future base. This will definitely keep the rabbit out.

Your walls need protection too as rabbits love to chew on them as well. You can buy clear plastic panels from hardware stores near you or plastic supply stores. Clear plastic panels can ascertain that the walls are protected against your rabbit chewing into the sheet rock or tearing off or wallpaper. Moreover, you can move furniture over the chewed spot so as to conceal the damage and protect it from further chewing.

Rabbits are cute little pets and as a pet owner, you have to protect your things from being chewed by your bunnies. Rabbits love chewing and you can’t prevent them from chewing so the best alternative is rabbit proofing your things.

Rabbits are wonderful animals and keeping them happy and protecting your things from damage makes your relationship much more nice and wonderful. Rabbits as pets are truly rewarding.

Give your rabbits utmost comfort and security

The design for rabbit hutch varies and you have to consider that the hutch must contain the basic elements needed for your pet rabbit before you purchase one. The hutch must shelter your pet against strong winds and rains. Also, it must have a hiding place for them to retreat from potential predators, must have enough light and air and room to exercise. Hutches are made from various materials but sturdy plywood with a solid frame with wire mesh for light and ventilation is much more preferred.

Rabbits love to spend some time outside during warm weather so it is best that the hutch is waterproof roof. Having a hinged rood in two parts will enable you to easily clean the hutch and access your rabbit.

Rabbits are small animals and they are easily targeted preys against large animals that can hunt them. It is important that the hutch has an enclosed space of about 12 x 24 inches at one end of the hutch. Also, it must have its own exterior door and an opening into a large portion of the hutch. Make sure that the area is dark so that the rabbit can sleep. This space is used for nesting too so give it a solid waterproof floor.

Rabbits need light and air too. You can provide them adequate ventilation and light by attaching a fine wire mesh over the circular or rectangular holes in the plywood walls. It would be great if you make vents on both sides that is almost entirely the size of the wall. The far end of the wall should have the vent come down half the wall’s height from the roof.

Moreover, rabbits need a room for running, jumping, and playing. Make a space that is 6 x 3 feet wide and 3 feet high. Provide a smooth solid floor as the wire can cut the rabbit’s feet. Outdoor cages have its exercise space directly on the grass. An additional interior ramp and a ledge that is 10 inches wide will give the rabbit different levels to run on.

The rabbit’s hutch must have a water bottle hung inside the hutch and must be replace daily. You can use a stainless steel bowl for food pellets instead of a plastic one. Rabbits can hew a plastic and this may cause them to get sick. Also, it is vital that you provide them ample room for these items inside their hutch.

Give your rabbit a touch of your creativity

If you have enough experiences with regards to having rabbits as pets, then it would be easier for you to build your own rabbit cage. Before you start building your own cage, ensure that you observe the rabbit and know its habits first. After all, it will be difficult for you build a unique cage when you do not know the uniqueness of your rabbit and its preferences. It is vital that you also take note of the common behaviors of the rabbit and its own special traits. Like humans, rabbits also are different so it is best that you provide them a cage that they will surely enjoy.

You can look at commercial cages and see how they are shaped. You will find out that indoor rabbit cage is in a rectangular shape. This is your basic purpose and you can then go to a fancier design if you like to. You have to bear in mind that the main component of your little pet’s cage is woven with wire. You can find the wire in local hardware stores near you. The best part of using this type is that it is flexible enough to allow you to connect two commercial rabbit cages if you choose to. Ensure that you cut the wire cleanly and choose a size that won’t trap your bunny’s little feet.

Generally, the bigger the cage, the better it is for your rabbit. So measuring its size carefully is highly important. A 32 x 38 inches is a perfect size for a rabbit cage. If you are making your own rabbit cage, then it is vital that you prepare to double check its stability. Reviewing it and touch up loose area using a pair of pliers is necessary.

There are some who even provide different rooms for their rabbit. They make sections to add room and privacy to rabbits inside their cage. So basically this is great for an additional room and space. However, cleaning the cage would be a little difficult for you. But then if your rabbit is litter trained, then you won’t have to worry about cleaning it.

Picking up a rabbit from its small cage can be a problem but if you have this type of open area rabbit indoor cage, this will definitely allow you to step into the area and play with your rabbit without causing too much disturbance to other rabbits. Also, you have to prepare to give a part of the room that you don’t mind getting dirty.

What you should know about a rabbit’s home

People may have confused rabbit cage to a rabbit hutch. There are a few things about rabbits and hutches that you must know if you would like to keep a healthy rabbit. There are generally two options in supplying your rabbit with their homes. An indoor pet bunny cage or outside hutches are basically the two options. Pet bunnies are normally kept indoors and rabbits grown for meat are raised outside. Other than this, pet bunnies can just as easily be great when kept out of doors in cases where there is insufficient space indoors.

Here are some facts regarding rabbits that you may know if you plan on keeping your bunny out-of-doors and if want to purchase a rabbit hutch. An outdoor hutch is generally made of square or rectangular room. The three sides are made from wood while the fourth side is made of wire mesh. The base of the hutch is also made with an all-wire mesh and the roof must be solid and removable for trouble-free cleaning.

The hutch basically sits on four wooden legs that serve several purposes. First and foremost, you can maintain its cleanliness in the interior area by allowing the droppings to fall to the ground instead of having it build up inside the hutch. Second of all, always keep your rabbit safe from predators. Third, this will take less of your time cleaning the hutch. And lastly, this will protect them from strong weather such as rain or snow, or even from direct sunlight.

The benefit of a bunny hutch, as contradicted by an indoor pet rabbit cage, is that it will be less likely a cleanup chore. If you forgot to clean the insides of the cage on a day to day basis, it will cause awful smell and becomes fairly intoxicating, but the smells are generally not a serious problem outside. If you are living on small homes and does not have the luxury of space to raise a bunny indoors, having an outside hutch would be better. Pet rabbits can be kept outside without any trouble.

If you want to get an indoor rabbit cage, here are a few things you may need to know. Cages are made basically with two levels and a ramp will allow your bunnies to move upstairs and downstairs as it chooses. This will help your rabbit a larger space to move about whilst not needing extra floor space. This type of cage will help your rabbit stay in good health.

So basically, if you want to keep a rabbit it is best that you get an indoor bunny cage. If you are going to raise rabbits for meat, it is ideal that you have them outdoors.

Make your bunny fit with the season!

Rabbit hutches and cages are great for your pet rabbit especially when you have an indoor pet rabbit. Rabbits are considered indoor pets and there are housing options to make your rabbit more “home-friendly”. As a pet owner, it is best that you provide your rabbit a presentable and great home. As they are indoor pets, it would be nice if you decorate their lovely homes for the season.

There is the dropping pan that is found underneath the hutch or cage. This pan helps keep the floor from becoming the bunny’s potty. It would be nice that you decorate the dropping pan for the holidays instead of hiding it from your guests and loved ones.

This concept works best for rabbits that are litter trained. The pan will stay cleaner and its decoration will last for a longer period of time. All you have to do is take the dropping pan out, empty it and clean it. Use recycled paper litter or the natural small animal litters that are used widely today. It is great to know that animal litter manufacturers have products that are available in different colors and this great for ideas for holiday decorating. This gives you more opportunity to be creative.

Let us assume that you are decorating for the Christmas holidays. You can decorate the hutch with different Christmas shapes using cookie cutters. You can decorate it into a Christmas tree shape, bell shape, or an ornament shape. Decide what layout your decoration be and place the cookie cutter in the pan as where you want it go. Fill the cookie cutter with your desired level with your first colored litter and then pack the contrasting color litter on the outside area of the cutter. You can then remove the cutters and slide your masterpiece under the cage or hutch.

You can also form holiday shapes using folded tin foil strips. Fold them to be sturdy enough and bend it into shape. This a nice method to create more imaginative shapes including letter. You can decorate it with your pet’s name.

You can decorate the rabbit hutch with colorful Easter eggs to spice up their homes for the season. Or you can also decorate it with hearts and on Valentine’s Day or firecrackers in celebrating the New Year. Imagination can take you anywhere and decorating your pet rabbit’s home never fail to give your guests and loved ones a “WOW” reaction. Express yourself and have fun!

Make your bunnies happy and clean

Rabbit cages need to be clean from time to time. It is essential that you keep it clean regularly. Cleaning it once a day is ideal and when you keep a good regular cleaning, it will then be easier for you to clean it. Your little pet will be running around inside its hutch and you will see lot of mess that you don’t see often because some of it are buried under the hay or bedding.

It is also recommended that you have some time getting rid of food or anything that can rot. Your rabbit may eat on a spoiled food and that can cause health problems. Rabbits will be much happier and healthier if their hutch is cleaned thoroughly. When you need to disinfect the rabbit cage, you will need to have a simple mixture of vinegar and water. Using this will absolutely take care of the odors that are bound to spring from the cage. It is important that you take the whole hutch out every week in the backyard and give it a good wash. Use a garden hose to make your cleaning easier, scrub it down and spray it with deodorizers if needed.

As a pet owner, you will have to give your rabbit the freedom to run and roam around the house from time to time. So this is where the type of door on the different hutches comes into play. When you want to keep in control of your rabbit to household access, then a cage with the door on the top is preferred since you can lift your rabbit and put him down when you feel the time is appropriate. If you have trust in your bunny to not ransack your house, then a hutch with a slide door is perfect for it. Your rabbit can get in and out anytime they want to.

The best cages for your rabbit is the one that they can come and go without worrying if there is a trapped bunny. However, it is ideal that your rabbit be trained to know its cage area is its bathroom so that they can return to it on its own. Also, the hutch must be secured but they are also not a jail. So ensure that your rabbit is comfortable being inside it. Cheap rabbit hutches and cages are good as the expensive ones when maintained properly.

The best cage for your pet rabbit

Pet rabbits can be kept readily in their cages in your homes with freedom to run freely in the house. This has to be done after rabbit-proofing. Rabbits take well to litter training so many people will allow their bunnies to run free in their homes at least a part of the day. More so, even rabbit is thoroughly toilet trained and your house rabbit proofed, a cage will serve as a safe haven or a nest where they can retreat for rest.

There are lots of rabbit cages that you can find but some of them are not ideal rabbit homes. Some are just too small and some have wire floors that don’t provide much comfort to the rabbit although it would be easy for you to clean. However, giving your rabbit a wired floor is not recommended.

You might ask how big the cage should be. Then answer to that is that the bigger the cage, the better. If your bunny will spend most of his time in its cage, then it would be best that you get him a bigger cage that is practical in the home. Generally, the cage must be at least 4 times the size of the rabbit. For smaller rabbits weighing less than 8 lbs., a 24” by 36” is best. For larger rabbits a 30” by 36” is ideal. Furthermore, a two story condo with a ramp that joined the levels is commonly used too.

Ideally, rabbits take fairly well to being litter trained, so give them a solid floor that is fine and not too difficult for you to clean. There are many cages for rabbits that are still made of wire floors over pull out pans, and are designed to make cleaning easier. However, using wire floors can be uncomfortable and this may also cause sores or the hocks to your bunny. So it would be best that you get a cage without wire floors. Wire floored cages must be covered with a piece of wood. Grass or sisal mats are nice to have in solid floored cages too so as to vary the surface and provide traction.

The door to the cage must be large enough to get a litter pan and your rabbit as well easily. A side door is highly recommended. When you have a top-opening cage, your rabbit will have difficulty getting in and out of it. it would be great that rabbits can get in and out on its own and a side door cage is perfect for that activity. More so, the opening should have smooth edges or plastic guard strips over the edges of the wires.

Building a rabbit hutch that is cheap does not mean that it is not good enough for your family pet. All you have to use are wire mesh, 1×1/2 inch squares of some recycled wood, a few staples, and inexpensive hinges for the door. Just follow these simple steps and give your bunny a customized rabbit hutch.

Here are the things that you will need. Recycled wood, 2x2s, 1x4s, and plywood, and cedar would be best. You will need heavy duty staple gun and staples, hinges, hasp and latch, wire mesh and cut it to 1’x1/2 squares size. In construction you will always need hammer and nails, saw, and wire cutters. Do not forget your graphing paper and pencil too for sketching your design.

The first thing you have to do is find a flat area for you to work. Then determine the size of the hutch and plan enough room to lay everything out before you begin. Then gather all the things that are needed. There are hardware stores that you can cut the wood to its appropriate sizes so you won’t have to cut it yourself.

Make a sketch of the hutch you want. Ideally, make it four feet off ground top, with a 24” x 36” x 24” tall wire cage. Using a plywood top will most likely keep the rain out. The bottom part of the hutch should be wire mesh for easy cleaning. You can also build a small corner with part plywood on the two sides so that rabbits can group together during rain.

You will have to cut the wood at the same time and check its dimensions. Cut all wood pieces and ply wood together and you can also make a plywood door instead of a wired door. You cut that dimension too. Then it is important that you fasten vertical supports, cross braces and plywood altogether. Use nails and ensure that the heads and tips are not protruding on the wood inside the cage. Make door with hinges and hasp latch and set it aside for installing after the wire is set on the cage.

Cut and staple wire mesh around the four corners of the cage. You will have to double staple the wire mesh on the outside especially at the corner joint so that rabbits cannot get to it. Cut and staple the wire mesh on the bottom of the cage and ensure that you not expose the wire ends inside the cage. Leave a space for the door you will still make.

You can then attach the pre-made door to the wire cage. You should have a wood at the ready on a vertical position for one side of door attachment. You can then screw hinges and hasp latch appropriately. Test the door by swinging it back and forth.

Lastly, you will need to place a small piece of plywood for rabbits to huddle on. Also, never forget to put inside their food bowl and place water too. You can use old towel inside the hutch for their comfort too. You can also make a ramp and upper level for added activity and movement to your bunny.

What your rabbit needs

Rabbits are cuddly little animals and they make great pets. Having them as pets is truly wonderful but you have to provide a great home where they will be happy and healthy. It is recommended that you get a hutch that is truly great. However, if you can’t buy an incredible deluxe hutch, there are those medium hutches that are classy or if you prefer, you can make one yourself. It is not difficult to make one.

The ideal rabbit hutch provides protection and coziness to your rabbit. You will notice that rabbits are fearful creatures especially when they are in an environment that is unfamiliar to them. They enjoy quiet environments with not so many unusual noise or people running around. So if you want to give them a dream rabbit hutch, it is best that you place them in a quiet area of your home or a location wherein noise is distant such your backyard.

Rabbits love to take a nap and they prefer to sleep comfortably in a plushy, comfortable and secure dark place. In cases where you own four to five rabbits, you will likely notice that they like to snuggle up together to keep company to one another. As an owner, it would be nice that you provide them a sleeping nook inside their hutches. The sleeping nook must be dark, warm and closed from the outside world.

Rabbits are cute little animals and they always love to run around. So giving them a room wherein they can run is totally wonderful. When you are situated in a hot climate, it is best that you give your little pets an outdoor hutch and let them run down into the grass whenever they want. However if you are living in a chilly atmosphere, you can get a different home for your bunnies. You can give them a backyard hutch for your rabbits to stay in the warmer seasons and an inside one on chilly months.

With this, your pets will have the freedom and chance to get fresh and clean air and grass on seasons that are substantial part of every year. More so, bunnies needed a place where they can retreat and burrow themselves whenever they want to. Even so, they also love the feeling of soft, fresh grass on their bellies and paws.

Rabbits are great pets and they are always fun to watch and play with. Give your bunnies the best hutch and you will likely see them happy and fulfilled. Enjoy your rabbits!

What you need to know about a rabbit cage

If you have a rabbit then you have to provide them a place to stay and be secured. Rabbits are great little pets and you should provide them a hutch or cage. There are several hutches that you can find in order to give them the best home for them. Rabbits are excellent pets to keep in cages and let them loose occasionally to run freely in your home.

Rabbit can be litter trained easily and you also need to rabbit proof your home before you can start letting your bunny out if its cage. It is important that you place your rabbit inside its cage as they appreciate that they have their own space and a safe haven. A rabbit cage is also important so that they have a place to which they can go back whenever they are frightened or a place to relax after they explore nooks and crannies in the home.

There are lots cheap rabbit cages and hutches that you can find in stores. There are those cheap cages that provide great protection and space for your pet rabbits like an expensive hutch offers. However, most cages you can find are smaller and that can be uncomfortable for your little pet.

Rabbits need space to move around eve when they are using the hutch as a resting place. The bigger the size of the hutch the better it will be. It is recommended that the hutch is four times bigger than your rabbit. Your pet will have a large space and this will absolutely make them happy. They can run and hop around inside their safe haven. There are also hutches that have two levels and these are joined together by a ramp. Rabbits will enjoy running around freely inside the hutch.

The cage doors of the rabbit hutch must fit a large rabbit comfortably without the need any squeezing. Also, it is best that a litter box can be removed with access too. A cage with a side door is ideal since it would be easier for your pet to hop in herself whenever they want some privacy and security. Just ensure that the doors have smooth edges and no sharp wires are protruding as this can cause injuries to your bunny.

The floor of the hutch is made of a wire-mesh and ensures that it is covered with a comfortable mat for them to lie upon. This provides traction and serves as a comfortable base for your pet when reclining inside. You can also place your old carpet or mattress inside the cage for additional comfort but ensure that your rabbit will not chew on it.

You can also customize one yourself if you want to. Having a pet rabbit is wonderful and nice. It is also fun and fulfilling too!

There’s no reason why you can’t keep your rabbit (and your rabbit hutch) indoors

So you’ve done your research, purchased or built your rabbit hutch, got your rabbit and now it’s time to think about the fun you can have with a pet rabbit.

Of course rabbits are outdoors creatures, and if you’ve got a good run around the rabbit hutch then you should let him play in the rabbit run each day, both for fun for you both and for exercise for your rabbit.

However as well as playing with your rabbit outdoors it’s perfectly possible to bring a rabbit indoors for some pet fun.

The first thing to know is that rabbits can be housetrained, or what is sometimes called potty trained. Like all pets that can be housetrained it takes a little work but it’s worth it in the long run. But house training your rabbit is not what we wanted to talk about today.

We wanted to look at some of the things that you can do to give both you and your rabbit a fun time together in the house.

Rabbits love to explore and they also love to find small holes to explore. Offer him a small dark hiding hole and chances are he will want to get in there. So there’s lots of potential to provide your rabbit with fun playthings.

Be inventive. Plastic pipes used in plumbing are cheap, can be cut easily and can be the source by lot of rabbit fun. And if you experiment a little with things that may make fun rabbit toys you can design a rabbit play area where both you and he can have tons of fun.

But you’ve also got to be careful. Be aware that rabbits are happy to poke their nose, or their entire body, into small holes, and so before you bring your rabbit indoors you must examine the area where he will be to see if there are any holes where, if he disappeared in there, he is not at risk of getting hurt or stuck.

Examine his proposed play area with a very keen eye for any potential hazards.

Remember as well that rabbits like to eat greens, so if he has the chance he will probably start to eat your houseplants, which won’t be good for the plants and which may also not be good for the rabbit.

Don’t let your rabbit roam the house, there are potential hazards. Confine him to one room or to one specific area, check it for hazards, then fill it with fun rabbit playthings and you and your rabbit can have hours of fun indoors, even when the weather is dreadful outside.

And of course you can also house your rabbit indoors. There is no reason why a good rabbit hutch should not be housed indoors, but always remember that your rabbit needs daily exercise and average rabbit hutches are too small to allow for sufficient exercise.

As we have said before the principal problem with most commercial rabbit cages is that they are too small. The rabbit needs a certain amount of space to hop around, to play and to exercise and most commercial rabbit hutches do not provide sufficient space for your rabbit to do this.

Your rabbit should have a cage sufficiently long to allow him to take 2 or 3 consecutive hops, and the minimum size to do this is at least 2 metres. And he should be able to stand up straight as well.

Unfortunately it is probably true to say that the majority of rabbits are housed in cages that are too small because of course these are the cheapest to buy.

However there is something else that you should consider when purchasing a rabbit cage as well as the size. You will find rabbit cages offered for sale with wire on the floor.

Rabbits do not like walking on wire and will actively avoid doing so, and so if your rabbit hutch has wire on the floor will probably find he spends most of his time in the sleeping area purely to avoid walking on the wire.

And it can also cause problems for his feet as well.

So remember when you’re shopping to your rabbit hutch, make it big and don’t buy one with wire on the floor. A solid floor works best.

There’s no reason why you can’t house a rabbit indoors

It’s entirely possible to keep your rabbit indoors all the time. If you are prepared to spend a little time working out how you will house your rabbit and where you will put his rabbit hutch then there is no reason why you cannot house him indoors.

Image via Wikipedia

An outdoors rabbit hutch needs to be fully enclosed to protect your rabbit from predators. However if you are keeping him indoors it is not necessary to have a fully enclosed hutch as there are no predators that are likely to attack him. Therefore you can design an indoors hutch with an open roof. This allows you to access your rabbit much more easily and also allows for ease of cleaning. We suggest a solid floor so that all mess can be easily cleaned up without damaging the floor of your room.

When looking for a good location for the rabbit housing avoid having it placed right near open windows, which can be draughty, in front of windows which get sun as these can get too hot in summer, and avoid anywhere near appliances such as gas heaters which can leak fumes.

It is possible to train a rabbit to use a litter box, or in other words to house train a rabbit. If you do so it is much easier keeping a rabbit indoors than if he makes a mess wherever he wants. If he has already been an outdoors rabbit and used a litter tray outside then use the same tray inside as he will most likely continue to use this as it smells right already. Make sure put the trade as far away as possible from any food or water source, preferably in a corner opposite to where the food and water is provided..

And remember that rabbits like to chew, and normally in an outdoors rabbit hutch you would place something for him to chew on such as a piece of wood. It’s important to do this indoors as well as he would chew on whatever he can find, which will probably be your windowsills if he is able to.

Much more dangerous is if he chews on any power cords and so, if your rabbit is to be out of his hutch from time to time make sure all power cords are protected with hard plastic sleeving.

And of course make sure he also has a private place to go into when he feels the need, or when sleeping. A box is a good way to provide this. Sometimes you need to cut holes at both ends of the box, as rabbits dislike entering an enclosed area with only one exit.

And remember, just like if you are housing your rabbit outdoors, when doing so indoors your rabbit still needs some fun things to do, so some rabbit toys such as old plastic containers or some cardboard boxes to chew on or maybe some toilet roll tubes will give him something to do.

And remember as well that if you have any other pets in the house such as a dog or a cat you must protect your rabbit from them.

There is no reason why you can’t house your rabbit indoors, you just need to spend a little time giving it some forethought.

You need to spend some daily time with your rabbit

It’s important to understand as a rabbit owner that there are certain responsibilities that attach to having your own rabbit. One of those responsibilities is cleaning the rabbit hutch. This should be done as frequently as possible and in any case when droppings build up.

How often the rabbit hutch is cleaned depends of course on how big it as as well as other factors, however frequent cleaning is essential.

A rabbit is an active animal and so should be given daily exercise. The ideal way to give your rabbit daily exercise is to have a run that surrounds the rabbit hutch so that you can open the door of the hutch to allow your rabbit out into the rabbit run each day.

Your rabbit will thoroughly enjoy the opportunity to stretch, run, hop and play, all those things that he cannot do inside his rabbit hutch, particularly if it is small.

But your responsibilities as a rabbit owner did not stop there. You also need to groom your rabbit daily. Groom him with a firm brush to help remove dead hair and anything else that has become caught in his hair such as burrs.

Rabbits can also get tangles in their hair, this is more of a problem in long haired than short haired rabbits.

Whilst grooming you should give your rabbit a good look over looking for discharge from the eyes, the nose for the ears and also check these for grass seeds which can become lodged in them.

And you also need to be aware of the length of your rabbit’s toenails as they grow and will need to be cut just like yours do.

And whilst all this might sound like a chore it’s part of having a rabbit and part of handling your rabbit. Handling your rabbit reinforces the bond between your rabbit and you and keeps him happy.

And a happy rabbit is a friendly rabbit who loves to be with you.

Most rabbit hutches are too small

Generally speaking most rabbit hutches that are purchased in pet shops are way too small. Rabbits are energetic creatures and require sufficient space to run around.

The rabbit housed in the hutch on the right is barely able to move.

It’s understandable that many rabbits are housed in hutches that are too small because those are the cheapest rabbit hutches available in the stores. However if you are looking to either buy or to make a hutch for your rabbit it’s important to remember that the bigger the hutch the better for your bunny.

And of course if you have more than one rabbit it’s important that the hutch be correspondingly bigger.

Rabbits are very active and require plenty of exercise during the day. Particularly if you have a small rabbit hutch it is also important to have a rabbit run where the rabbit and spend some time during the day running around exercising. Some people build a run for their rabbit in the back garden and take bunny out to the run each day for a couple of hours of exercise.

Others have a wired enclosure that is accessible from the rabbit hutch. Opening a door of the hutch allows the rabbit access to the run.

Your rabbit should have at least 2 hours during the day when he is able to run and jump freely. It’s also very important that the run have fences sufficiently high and strong to protect the rabbit from predators such as dogs, and to stop the rabbit escaping.

Remember that rabbits can dig.

Remember rabbits are energetic creatures. They need plenty of room in their hutch and at least 2 hours of exercise in a bigger area each day.

There’s some confusion over what a rabbit run really is.

There’s some confusion over the different terms used for housing for rabbits. You will often see the words rabbit run, rabbit hutch, rabbit cage and rabbit run used interchangeably. For instance there are some websites that sell both rabbit runs and rabbit hutches and when you look at the 2 it’s difficult to tell the difference between the runs and the hutches.

In both cases they are housing for rabbits.

There is in our view however a different meaning for the term rabbit run. In our view a rabbit run is an outdoors area where your rabbit can play and exercise safely. It is usually surrounded by some form of wire netting or fence so that predators such as dogs and boxes cannot attack the rabbits and so that the rabbits do not disappear.

Many rabbits are kept indoors. There’s no problem with keeping a rabbit indoors as long as you allow him time outside to exercise and play. Rabbits are naturally energetic creatures and love to run and jump. Not only that but just like people rabbits become unhealthy and overweight if they eat too much and exercise too little.

Like all of us rabbits need to stretch their legs, get the wind in their fur and go for a good run.

And if you watch native rabbits you will see that they also play from time to time. Rabbits like to play but cannot do so in a small rabbit hutch.

If you have an indoors rabbit then put some thought into how you can give him some outdoors playtime, preferably every day but if not every day then as often as possible. It’s not too difficult to design your own rabbit run, you can either have a permanent fixture with posts set into the ground and chicken wire around the posts, or you can have interlocking wire panels that can be assembled for use or taken apart for storage or to move them round. The beauty of a portable rabbit run is that you can move the rabbits over the lawn from location to location enabling them to play on fresh grass.

(And we just had to put this rabbit photo in because we couldn’t resist it. Isn’t that the most beautifully coloured rabbit?)

Your rabbit cage has to keep your rabbit comfortable

There is some debate about what material to use on the floor of your rabbit hutch. Some people prefer a solid floor to the hutch and others prefer a wire floor. There are positives and negatives to each.

A solid floor is fine, metal is always better than wood for a number of reasons. A metal floor is much easier to clean than a wooden floor and does not soak up odours like wood does.

A wire floor allows the droppings to fall through the wire, thereby reducing the need for cleaning. This assumes of course that the cage is off the ground. If you put your rabbit hutch on legs then using a wire floor makes the cage cleaner because the droppings fall through.

However it is also important to understand that rabbits don’t like walking on wire. They don’t like walking where their feet are likely to fall through and so it’s much better, if you want the droppings to fall through, that you look for material which provides wider areas for the rabbits feet and smaller holes. Plastic slats can do this job well.

Of course if you’re putting your rabbit hutch directly onto the grass you don’t need any floor at all, except for in the sleeping area. But you need to remember when you pick up your rabbit hutch that you need to remove the rabbit before carrying the hutch to new grass or he may fall out.

Here is an interesting video about what to use on the floor of your rabbit hutch.

Rabbit hutches that are too small aren’t good for your rabbit

Here’s a good roundup of some great rabbit hutches. These cages are big, and even if you only have a few rabbits it doesn’t matter, it’s always better to have them big. Big is better.

Rabbits need more space than you might think. Of course if you let your rabbit out during the day for a run around it’s less important, but even so a small hutch isn’t good.

Be your rabbits best friend. If you’re going to buy him a rabbit hutch make sure it’s go enough space for him, or them, to run around in. And if you’ve got a bit hutch you can have more rabbits too.

Don’t be stingy with your rabbit’s hutch. Make it big. Your rabbit will love you for it.

Here’s the first of our rabbit hutches videos. Enjoy

We just love videos about rabbits and rabbit hutches. Building them, buying them or just anything about rabbits.

So here’s a good video about rabbit hutches that you may find interesting. It’s a solid rabbit cage, good strong wire and it’s off the ground.

There is a wire floor to the cage so that the rabbit droppings fall through the wire onto the ground. That makes it easier to keep. Less cleaning of the hutch and the rabbits are happier living without rabbit droppings to sit in.

This is a good rabbit hutch.

If you’re building your own rabbit hutch this is a good design to model it on.

And Wikipedia has some more good information on raising rabbits as pets.
